Andrew Birk
The lights are on but no one’s home
September
LAND is happy to present the solo exhibition The lights are on but no one’s home by the Catalonia-based artist Andrew Birk. The lights are on but no one’s home features recent watercolor works by Birk presented on nearly every wall in every room of LAND. From the entranceway and main room, to the attic and bathrooms, Birk’s watercolors occupy spaces that were previously inaccessible to visitors, expanding the physical scope of the gallery space within the house. Birk’s small paintings on paper feature loose but controlled brushwork representing a dynamic myriad of subject matter, from a small seemingly glowing fetus in the womb to a lush infinitely deep countryside landscape. Birk’s paintings present compositions that appear at once like slapdash snapshots of personally significant scenes, while others pointedly present legible cultural symbols, creating a threshold of intimacies that are both formally direct and peculiarly clouded.
Andrew Birk (b. 1985) lives and works in Catalonia, Spain. Birk’s work has been exhibited internationally, including recent solo and group exhibitions at Riña (Guetamala), The Court (Pescara), Galerie Valeria Cetraro (Paris), Kunstraum am Schauplatz (Vienna), Jelato Love (Mallorca), Galeria Karen Huber (Mexico City), among others. His work has been published in ArtReview, I-D, Huffington Post, and Vice. Birk has also developed the artist-run space AMOR in Tlalpan, Mexico City and most recently, Spirit Vessel in Espinavessa.
